Gas pipework is the part of a gas installation nobody thinks about until something needs connecting to it, and then it becomes the thing that decides whether the job is straightforward or not.
The recurring surprise is capacity. An existing gas supply was sized for the appliances that were there when it was installed. Add a hob, or upgrade a boiler, or run a supply out to a garage, and the question is whether the existing pipe can deliver enough gas to everything at once. Frequently it cannot, and that is discovered at the worst possible moment.

When you need gas pipework work
A new appliance.
A gas hob where there was none, a second cooking appliance, or a gas fire. Each needs a supply run and a connection point.
Upgrading a boiler.
Higher output boilers need more gas. A supply that fed a 24kW boiler adequately may not feed a 30kW one, which is why the gas supply and pipe size get checked at survey rather than on installation day.
Extending to an outbuilding or garage.
A supply to a workshop, garage or annexe. Doable, with specific requirements about routing and protection.
Moving a meter or an appliance.
Kitchen refits, extensions and garage conversions all tend to produce this.
Replacing old pipework.
Corroded, damaged, or pipework that was installed to standards that have since moved on.
Repairs.
Following a leak, after damage, or where a tightness test has failed.
Sizing: the part that actually matters
Gas has to arrive at each appliance at the right pressure to burn correctly. As gas travels along a pipe it loses pressure, and the longer and narrower the pipe, the more it loses.
The permitted pressure drop between the meter outlet and the appliance inlet for a natural gas installation is 1 mbar. That figure is the whole reason pipe sizing exists as a discipline. Undersize the pipe, or extend an existing one without recalculating, and the appliance receives less gas than it needs.
The symptoms of an undersized supply are worth recognising, because they get misdiagnosed as appliance faults constantly:
- A boiler that works fine alone but underperforms when the hob is on
- A boiler that will not reach its rated output
- Lazy or yellow flames at an appliance when another is running
- A new higher-output boiler that never performs as well as the old lower-output one did
This is why we calculate rather than assume. Adding an appliance to an existing run means working out the total demand and confirming the pipe can carry it, not connecting into the nearest convenient point and hoping.
The rules on where pipe can go
Gas pipework routing is not free-form and the requirements exist for good reasons.
Through walls,
pipe must be sleeved, with the sleeve sealed at one end, so that any leak vents to a safe place rather than into a cavity.
In cavity walls,
gas pipe must not run within the cavity. It may cross by the shortest practicable route, and it must not run along it.
Under floors and in voids,
pipework needs to be accessible where reasonably possible and protected from damage. Enclosed unventilated voids are a problem, because a small leak accumulates rather than dispersing.
Buried in walls,
pipe needs protection against corrosion and against being nailed or screwed into later.
Outside,
pipe needs corrosion protection and support, and where buried, adequate depth and protection.
If someone has run gas pipe through a cavity or sealed it into an unventilated void, that is not a technicality. It is the difference between a leak that disperses and a leak that collects.
Tightness testing
Every piece of gas work finishes with a tightness test. The installation is isolated, pressurised and monitored on a gauge for a defined period to confirm nothing is escaping.
It is also the first diagnostic step when a leak is suspected, and it forms part of an annual landlord gas safety check.
A gas job that finishes without a tightness test is not a finished gas job.
Gas pipework in Milton Keynes: the local picture
1970s estates, Beanhill, Coffee Hall, Netherfield, Fishermead, Conniburrow and Bradville. Original installations, frequently altered, and meter positions that made sense in 1974. These are the properties where a boiler upgrade most often turns into a gas supply upgrade too, so it is worth establishing at survey rather than on the day.

Frequently asked questions
Can you run a gas supply to my garage or outbuilding?
Usually yes. Routing, protection and depth for any buried section all need doing correctly, and the total demand has to be checked against the existing supply.
My new boiler is bigger than the old one. Is that a problem?
It can be. A higher output boiler draws more gas, and a supply that was adequate before may not be. We check pipe size and gas rate at survey.
Why does my boiler struggle when the hob is on?
That is a classic undersized supply symptom. Total demand exceeds what the pipe can deliver at the required pressure.
Can gas pipe run through a cavity wall?
It can cross by the shortest practicable route, but it must not run along the cavity. If yours does, it should be corrected.
Can I move my gas meter?
Meter position changes involve your gas supplier as well as an engineer, and the process differs depending on what is being moved and how far. Tell us what you want to achieve and we will explain the route.
