Most central heating faults are not boiler faults. The boiler gets blamed because it is the expensive box on the wall, but a system is pipes, pumps, valves, radiators and the water inside them, and any of those will make the house cold while the boiler runs perfectly happily.

The useful thing about heating faults is that they are readable. Where a radiator is cold tells you something specific. Which radiators are cold tells you something else. A system that is noisy is telling you a different story from one that is silent and lukewarm. Learning to read that saves you money, because it means the engineer arrives already knowing roughly what they are looking for.

Where the radiator is cold

Cold at the top, hot at the bottom.

Air in the radiator. Bleed it. If the same radiator needs bleeding repeatedly, air is getting in from somewhere, which usually means a small leak, a failing expansion vessel, or an auto air vent that has given up.

Cold at the bottom, hot at the top.

Sludge. Magnetite and debris settle in the bottom of the radiator and block circulation from the lower half. Bleeding will not fix this. It needs flushing.

Cold in the middle, warm at both ends.

Also sludge, usually further along.

One radiator cold, the rest fine.

Valve problem. A thermostatic radiator valve with a seized pin is the most common cause, and it is a cheap fix that people often live with for years. Also worth checking the lockshield valve on the other end has not been closed.

All the radiators cold while the boiler runs.

Circulation. Pump failure, a stuck diverter or zone valve, an air lock, or heavy sludge in the pipework.

The radiators furthest from the boiler are cold.

Balancing, or a pump that is no longer moving water far enough. Common on extensions and loft conversions where radiators were added without rebalancing the system.

What the noise means

Kettling

, a rumbling or boiling sound from the boiler. Scale on the heat exchanger causing water to boil locally. Directly linked to water hardness, which matters here more than most places.

Banging or knocking in the pipes

when the heating starts or stops. Usually pipes expanding against joists or clips, sometimes water hammer from a fast-closing valve.

Gurgling.

Air in the system.

A humming or whining pump.

Bearings on the way out, or a pump running at the wrong speed setting.

What actually goes wrong

Sludge, and why it matters more than people think

The black water that comes out of a radiator is magnetite, an iron oxide produced as steel radiators corrode from the inside. It builds up over years, settles in radiator bottoms and low points in the pipework, blocks heat exchangers, and wears pump bearings.

Systems produce it faster when they are repeatedly topped up, because every top-up brings fresh oxygenated water in. That is why a slow leak somebody has been managing with the filling loop for two years usually comes with a sludge problem attached.

The fix is a flush, chemical or power depending on severity, followed by a magnetic filter and fresh inhibitor. The important part is that the filter gets checked and cleaned at every annual service, because a full filter has stopped filtering.

Pump and valve failures

Pumps are consumables. Fifteen years is a good run. Diverter valves and zone valves fail more often, and their failure modes are distinctive: heating but no hot water, hot water but no heating, or heating you cannot turn off.

Controls

A surprising share of “the heating has broken” calls come down to a programmer that lost its schedule after a power cut, flat batteries in a wireless room thermostat, or a smart thermostat that has dropped off the wifi. Worth checking before anyone charges you for a visit.

Hard water and kettling

On a sealed heating system the water is not replaced, so scale in the heating circuit is limited. The problem shows up in two places instead: the domestic hot water side of a combi, and any system that has been topped up repeatedly, which effectively feeds it fresh hard water on a regular basis. Kettling in a boiler that gets topped up monthly is usually the two problems meeting.

Microbore and small bore pipework

A lot of the 1970s and 1980s Milton Keynes housing was plumbed in microbore, typically 8mm or 10mm copper running from a manifold to each radiator. It was quick to install and it works, but the small diameter means it blocks with sludge far more readily than 15mm pipe, and a blocked microbore leg is a common reason one radiator stays stubbornly cold when everything else is fine.

Beanhill, Coffee Hall, Netherfield, Fishermead, Conniburrow and Bradville are the areas where this comes up most. Power flushing microbore needs doing carefully rather than aggressively, and sometimes the right answer is replacing the leg rather than trying to clear it.

System age by area

The 1980s and 1990s estates, Furzton, Emerson Valley, Shenley Brook End and Loughton, are largely on systems installed or substantially reworked in the late 1990s. Radiators from that era are now well into the range where internal corrosion is producing sludge steadily.

The newer estates, Brooklands, Whitehouse, Fairfields, Oakgrove, Tattenhoe Park and Glebe Farm, usually run underfloor heating downstairs and radiators upstairs. That adds manifolds, actuators, blending valves and thermostats per zone, so faults tend to be zone-specific rather than whole-house.

Older properties in Stony Stratford, Newport Pagnell, Olney and Wolverton often have systems that grew rather than were designed, with radiators added over decades without the pipework or pump being reconsidered. Balancing is frequently the actual issue.

When a repair becomes an upgrade

Some conversations are worth having honestly rather than fixing the same thing twice:

  • If radiators are cold at the bottom across the whole house, individual repairs are not the answer. The system needs flushing.
  • If you have added an extension or a loft conversion and the far end of the house never warms up, the problem may be pump capacity or balancing rather than a fault.
  • If a system has been topped up regularly for years, find the leak before spending money on anything else.
  • If radiators are corroded enough to be leaking at the seams, replacement is cheaper than repeated repairs.

Keeping it working

  • Run the heating briefly once a month over summer to keep the pump and valves from seizing
  • Open and close thermostatic valves fully at the end of the season, since they seize in the position they sat in all summer
  • Fix pressure loss rather than topping up
  • If you add radiators, get the system rebalanced

Frequently asked questions

Why is one radiator always cold?

Most often a thermostatic valve with a seized pin, or a lockshield valve closed too far. On older Milton Keynes properties with microbore, a blocked leg is the other common cause.

Do I need a power flush?

Only if the system water condition justifies it. We test rather than assume. A chemical flush is sufficient in many cases, and selling a power flush to a system that does not need one is a common enough practice that it is worth asking why it is being recommended.

My radiators are hot but the house is still cold. Why?

Usually undersized radiators for the room, particularly after a conversion or an extension, or a system running at a flow temperature that is too low for the radiator size. Both are fixable, and neither is a boiler fault.

The heating comes on when I have not asked for it. What is that?

Typically a stuck zone or diverter valve, or a programmer that has reverted to a default schedule. Occasionally a thermostat sited somewhere that never warms up, like a draughty hallway.
