Winslow is a small Buckinghamshire market town about twelve miles south-west of us, and it is in the middle of a change. New housing has gone up on the back of the East West Rail line, which now runs past the town with a new station built and handed over. At the time of writing the station is finished but still not carrying passengers, and residents have been campaigning to get it open.

We mention it because it is the thing everyone in Winslow is talking about, and because the housing growth that came with it is genuinely changing the mix of property here.

We are based in Two Mile Ash in Milton Keynes. Gas Safe registered, registration number 981362.

  • Gas Safe registered 981362
  • Around twelve miles away, twenty-five to thirty minutes
  • Mains gas, LPG and oil all need naming when you call
  • Booked work Monday to Saturday, 8am to 8pm

The housing in Winslow, and what it means

The old market town. Georgian and earlier property around the Market Square and the older streets, with a conservation area and listed buildings including Winslow Hall. Solid walls, higher heat loss, larger radiators required, and fixed soil stack positions constraining bathroom layouts.

On the older and listed property, flue terminal position and external pipework are design questions rather than free technical choices, and consent may be required for alterations affecting a listed building. Worth surveying a boiler replacement before the existing one fails rather than during.

Recent estate development. A meaningful amount of new housing, much of it built to current standards with mains pressure throughout, unvented cylinders and, in some phases, underfloor heating on the ground floor. Faults on these sit in controls, actuators and manifolds far more often than in pipework.

That is a useful thing to know if you have just moved into one: a cold room is usually a cheap part rather than a serious problem.

The villages around Winslow. Great Horwood, Swanbourne, Granborough, Mursley, Little Horwood and the rest. Older stone and brick property, higher heat loss, and a meaningful number not connected to the mains gas grid, running instead on oil or LPG.

If you are in one of these and on oil, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme currently offers an increased grant for off-gas-grid properties replacing oil or LPG heating, running to the end of March 2027. Worth looking into if you were considering it anyway.

Before you call

Tell us what heats the property when you call

Mains gas, LPG and oil are three different things with three different registration requirements, and it saves a wasted visit for both of us.

What we get called out to around Winslow

Boiler replacement, in both the older town property and the newer estates. See boiler installation.

Underfloor heating and control faults on the new housing. Usually inexpensive. See underfloor heating.

Radiator sizing in solid-walled older property. See radiators.

Landlord gas safety certificates for rented property in the town and villages. See our CP12 page.

Water hardness

A hard water area, and scale is the main driver of the failures we attend, particularly seized shower cartridges and scaled combi heat exchangers producing hot water that fluctuates while the heating works perfectly.

The figure varies by supply zone, so check your postcode with your supplier. Our hard water guide covers what helps.

Getting to Winslow

Around twelve miles from Two Mile Ash, typically twenty-five to thirty minutes. Fine for booked work, and workable for urgent jobs, though we will give you a realistic time rather than a flattering one, and longer again to the outlying villages.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do you actually cover Winslow?

Yes, around twelve miles from us and inside our normal working area for booked work.

My property is on oil rather than gas. Can you help?

Tell us when you call. Oil, LPG and mains gas are separate things with different registration requirements, and we will be straight about what we cover before arranging a visit.

Is a heat pump worth considering out here?

If you are off the gas grid on oil or LPG, it is worth looking at. There is currently an increased Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for exactly that situation, running to the end of March 2027, applied for by an MCS certified installer on your behalf.

I have just moved into one of the new houses and a room is cold. What is it?

Most often a failed actuator on the underfloor manifold or a flat thermostat battery. Open the manifold cupboard, take a photo and send it over, and we can usually narrow it down before arriving.

Do you cover the villages?

Yes, including Great Horwood, Little Horwood, Swanbourne, Granborough, Mursley and Steeple Claydon.
