Low water pressure is a symptom, not a fault, and it has about eight different causes ranging from a valve somebody knocked to a supply pipe that needs replacing. The difference between the cheapest fix and the most expensive is substantial, which makes diagnosing it properly worth doing before spending anything.

Pressure and flow are not the same thing

Worth understanding, because it changes what the answer is.

Pressure

is force, measured in bar. It is what pushes water along.

Flow rate

is volume over time, measured in litres per minute. It is what actually fills your bath and runs your shower.

You can have good pressure and poor flow, which is the classic symptom of a narrow or partially blocked supply pipe: plenty of force, not enough water getting through. You can also have adequate flow at low pressure, which is what a gravity hot water system gives you.

When people say low pressure they almost always mean poor flow. We measure both, because the combination tells you where the problem is.

Start here: is it one outlet or all of them?

The single most useful diagnostic, and you can do it in five minutes.

One tap or one shower only.

The problem is at that fitting. Blocked aerator, blocked shower head, scaled cartridge, or a partially closed isolating valve beneath it. Cheap, and often something you can sort yourself.

All the hot, none of the cold.

Your hot water system. On a gravity system this is normal rather than a fault, because gravity gives low pressure by design. On a combi or unvented system it points to a scaled heat exchanger, a partially closed valve on the hot side, or a failing component.

Everything in the house, hot and cold.

The incoming supply, the stopcock, a pressure reducing valve, or the main itself.

Everything, and your neighbours too.

The causes, roughly in order of how cheap they are to fix

A partially closed stopcock

Always check this first, and it is remarkable how often it is the answer. A stopcock that has been turned down slightly, perhaps during previous work and never fully reopened, throttles the whole property. Free to fix.

Note the related trap: a stopcock left fully open for years can seize in that position, so opening it fully and then backing it a quarter turn is the sensible practice.

Scale in aerators and shower heads

Milton Keynes water averages around 300 mg/l of calcium carbonate through Anglian Water, with MK8 at roughly 317 against a UK average of 207. Aerators and shower heads block with scale, and the effect creeps up so gradually that people adapt to it without noticing.

Unscrew the aerator, soak it, refit it. If the flow improves, that was your problem. Costs nothing.

Seized or partially failed isolating valves

The small valves under sinks and toilets scale up. A partially seized one restricts flow to that fitting. Covered on our taps page.

A failing pressure reducing valve

Where one is fitted, usually with an unvented cylinder, a failing PRV can throttle the supply progressively. Replaceable.

Scale and corrosion in older pipework

Old galvanised steel and old copper both narrow internally over decades. The symptom is poor flow that has been getting slowly worse for years rather than changing suddenly.

The supply pipe

Narrow, old, partially blocked, or leaking. This is the significant one, and it is covered on our water supply pipe page. An underground leak also shows up as gradually worsening flow, which is why the meter test is part of any proper diagnosis.

A shared supply

Some older properties share a supply pipe with a neighbour. When they run a bath, you notice. Worth establishing, because it changes the options.

Your hot water system is gravity fed

Not a fault. A cylinder with a loft tank produces low pressure by design, and it is worse the higher you are in the building. The answer is not a repair, it is either a pump or a change of hot water system. Our unvented cylinder page covers the conversion.

What can actually be done

Fix the restriction.

Stopcock, valves, aerators, scaled fittings. Cheapest and surprisingly often sufficient.

Replace the supply pipe.

Where the incoming supply is the constraint. The most effective option where it applies.

Change the hot water system.

Where the problem is gravity, converting to an unvented cylinder gives mains pressure at every outlet.

Pump.

Only on a gravity system, and only on the parts fed by the tank. You cannot pump a mains supply, and pumps cannot be used with combis or unvented cylinders.

An accumulator or booster.

Where the mains genuinely cannot deliver enough. These store mains water so it can be drawn at a higher rate than the main supplies, and there are regulatory considerations around how they are installed. Worth discussing properly rather than treating as an off-the-shelf answer.

Your water company has a minimum pressure standard

Note that Anglian Water, like every water company, has a statutory minimum standard for pressure at the boundary. If yours is below it, that is their problem to resolve rather than yours to plumb around. Worth establishing before you spend on a pump.

Low pressure in Milton Keynes: the local picture

1970s estates, Beanhill, Coffee Hall, Netherfield, Fishermead, Conniburrow and Bradville. Original supply pipes, frequently narrow, and the group most likely to find that a combi upgrade exposes a supply limitation that was invisible on the old gravity system.

1980s and 1990s estates, Furzton, Emerson Valley, Shenley Brook End and Loughton. Largely gravity fed, so poor hot pressure is usually the system rather than a fault. This is where the pump or convert conversation happens.

Newer estates, Brooklands, Whitehouse, Fairfields, Oakgrove, Tattenhoe Park and Glebe Farm. Unvented cylinders and modern supplies, so genuine low pressure is unusual. Where it occurs it is normally a valve, a scaled fitting or a PRV.

Older property in Stony Stratford, Newport Pagnell, Olney and Wolverton. Long supply runs, occasional lead or steel, and the highest likelihood of a shared supply.

Five minutes before you call

  • Check every tap: is it one outlet or all of them?
  • Check hot and cold separately
  • Ask a neighbour whether theirs is affected
  • Find your stopcock and check it is fully open, then back a quarter turn
  • Unscrew and clean the aerator on the affected tap
  • Check the isolating valve under the affected fitting is fully open
  • Note whether this came on suddenly or has been getting worse for years
  • Run the meter test, since an underground leak reduces flow
  • Note what changed recently, if anything

That list resolves a meaningful proportion of cases at no cost, and it makes the rest much quicker to diagnose.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my hot water weaker than my cold?

Usually a gravity hot water system, which gives low pressure by design. Sometimes a scaled combi heat exchanger, or a partially closed valve on the hot side.

Can I fit a pump to fix it?

Only on a gravity system. Pumps cannot be used on a combi or an unvented cylinder, and you cannot pump a mains supply.

Is my low pressure Anglian Water’s fault?

Possibly, if the whole street is affected or if pressure at your boundary is below the statutory standard. Worth establishing before spending money on your own plumbing.

It got worse suddenly. What causes that?

Sudden changes point to a valve, a burst, work on the main, or debris after mains work. Gradual worsening points to scale, corrosion or a developing supply pipe problem.

Would a new boiler improve it?

Not on its own. A combi delivers hot water at whatever rate the incoming main supplies. If the main is the constraint, a bigger boiler changes nothing.

Can you measure my flow rate?

Yes, and that is the first thing we do. Static pressure and dynamic flow together tell us where the constraint is.

Does hard water cause low pressure?

Indirectly. Scale narrows old pipework and blocks aerators, shower heads and valves. Our hard water guide covers it.

Do you deal with commercial properties?
